In line with this commitment to scientific openness, we uphold the protection of authors’ copyrights, preserve the integrity of academic content, and maintain the principles of transparency and scholarly publishing ethics.

This document sets forth the Terms of Use governing all access to, interactions with, and utilization of the websites, publishing platforms, journal and book systems, and any other services and products operated by Utan Kayu Publishing (“Publisher,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), a publishing entity based in Indonesia. These Terms apply to and are binding upon all parties using our services, including but not limited to website visitors, authors, editors, peer reviewers, subscribers, registered users, and any other third parties (collectively referred to herein as “Users,” “you,” or “your”).

1. Access and Use of Services

1.1 Consent to Use

By accessing or using our websites and services, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms of Use in their entirety without exception. Continued use of the services constitutes acceptance of all applicable policies and regulations.

1.2 User Obligations

All Users are required to use the services responsibly, lawfully, and ethically. You must not interfere with, misuse, or damage our technological infrastructure, servers, or digital content. You are solely responsible for the accuracy and authenticity of any data or documents submitted through our platforms, including but not limited to manuscripts, metadata, account information, and correspondence. Manipulative conduct such as plagiarism, data fabrication, or identity falsification is strictly prohibited.

1.3 Prohibited Use

Users shall not use our services for any unlawful or unethical purposes, including but not limited to:

  • Distributing content that includes hate speech, discrimination based on race, religion, ethnicity, or gender, sexual harassment, pornography, or other offensive material.
  • Uploading malicious software such as viruses, malware, or other harmful code.
  • Using the platform for commercial promotions, advertisements, or business transactions without the Publisher’s prior written consent.
  • Infringing upon the intellectual property rights of third parties, including copyrights, trademarks, or the moral rights of other authors.
  • Attempting to gain unauthorized access to accounts, data, or systems belonging to others by hacking, social engineering, or any other manipulative technique.

2. Ownership and Intellectual Property Rights

2.1 Author Rights

We adhere to the principle of author-owned copyright. All intellectual property rights in scholarly works published on our platform—including journal articles, book manuscripts, illustrations, and supporting data—remain solely with the authors. In connection with publication, authors grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, and perpetual license to edit, format, publish, disseminate, distribute, and archive their work in both print and digital formats, including for indexing and academic repository purposes.

2.2 Open Access Licensing

All works published by us are made available under an Open Access model and distributed under a Creative Commons license, such as CC BY 4.0, unless otherwise stated. These licenses permit anyone to access, reuse, redistribute, and adapt the content, provided that proper attribution is given to the original author. The specific licensing terms applicable to each journal or book are clearly stated on the respective publication’s official webpage and are transparently explained in the author guidelines.

2.3 Ownership of Systems and Technology

All intellectual property rights in our websites, electronic publishing systems, user interfaces, platform designs, software components, and digital features developed or operated by us are the exclusive property of the Publisher or its licensed third-party providers. Users are prohibited from:

  • Copying, modifying, redistributing, or reselling any system elements or platform designs without our prior written authorization.
  • Using automated technologies such as bots, scrapers, or crawlers to copy, access, or interfere with our services, in whole or in part.

3. Author Responsibilities and Publication Process

3.1 Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

Each author submitting a manuscript to the Utan Kayu Publishing platform is required to adhere to the highest standards of scientific publishing ethics and bears full responsibility for the originality and authenticity of the submitted work. Authors must ensure that the manuscript is their own original work, has not been previously published, and is not under consideration elsewhere. Plagiarism, data fabrication, duplicate publication, and other violations of academic integrity constitute serious breaches of our policies.

All contributors must be listed fairly and transparently in accordance with their respective contributions. Practices such as guest authorship (listing individuals without actual contributions) or ghost authorship (excluding major contributors) are strictly prohibited. Supporting data or cited sources must be made available and verifiable by editors or reviewers upon request during the editorial process.

3.2 Editorial Process and Peer Review

Submitted manuscripts will undergo an initial screening by the editor to determine their alignment with the scope and aims of the respective journal or book series. Manuscripts passing the initial evaluation will proceed to single-blind or double-blind peer review, depending on the policy of each publication. Final decisions regarding acceptance, revision, or rejection rest solely with the editor, based on the scientific merit, methodological rigor, originality, and academic standards of the submitted work.

3.3 Open Access Licensing and Publication Policy

We adopt an Open Access publishing model to support inclusive and broad dissemination of scientific knowledge. Each manuscript accepted for publication will be licensed under a relevant Creative Commons scheme (such as CC BY-SA 4.0 or another applicable variant), as detailed on the individual journal or book series webpage: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/#international-40.

Authors retain full copyright over their work. By publishing with us, authors grant the Publisher and the public a non-exclusive license, under the terms of the open license applied, to distribute, adapt, and legally use the content.

4. Content Usage Terms

4.1 Permitted Use

Utan Kayu Publishing encourages the lawful use of published academic content in accordance with open access principles and scientific ethics. Users are permitted to access, read, download, print, store, translate, and share the content for personal, educational, research, or non-commercial professional purposes.

Users may also adapt, quote, and incorporate portions of the content (such as tables, graphics, quotations, or paragraphs) provided that:

  • Proper attribution is clearly given to the original author and publication;
  • The meaning, context, or accuracy of the content is not distorted or misrepresented.

4.2 Restrictions on Use

While open access is provided, certain restrictions apply to protect the integrity of the content and the rights of authors. Users shall not:

  • Remove the author’s name, license statement, DOI, or original source link from the publication.
  • Redistribute altered, falsified, or misleading versions of the content.
  • Use illustrations, photographs, or other third-party visual materials without explicit permission, unless covered under the applicable open license.
  • Resell or distribute the content for commercial purposes without prior written authorization from the Publisher.

Important Notice:

For uses beyond the permitted scope of the open license—such as republication, anthologization, or inclusion in paid courses—written permission must be obtained. Requests should be submitted via email to: [email protected].

5. Advertising and Third-Party Links

5.1 Advertising Policy

Utan Kayu Publishing permits limited advertising on its website as part of its efforts to support the sustainability of its publishing operations. However, all advertising practices shall adhere to the following principles:

  1. Editorial Independence: We uphold the highest standards of editorial independence in all scholarly publishing activities. All editorial decisions, including acceptance, revision, and publication of manuscripts, are made solely by our editorial team without interference or influence from advertisers, sponsors, or other commercial entities. We do not endorse, certify, or guarantee the accuracy or validity of any products or services advertised on our website, either explicitly or implicitly.
  2. Advertisement Review and Rejection Rights: Our editorial board reserves the full right to review, approve, or reject any advertising material submitted for display on our platform. All advertisements are reviewed to ensure alignment with the values of scientific integrity, publication ethics, and academic standards upheld by the publisher. Advertisements may be refused or removed if they contain misleading content, unverifiable claims, or statements targeting specific individuals or groups. Ads that conflict with scientific principles, damage the reputation of the journal, or contain discriminatory, hateful, pornographic, violent, or otherwise unlawful content will also be rejected.
  3. Prohibited Harmful Products: We strictly prohibit advertisements for products or services known to endanger public health. This includes, but is not limited to, advertisements promoting tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, or unproven health remedies. Likewise, alternative therapies that have not been validated through credible scientific studies are not permitted on our platform.
  4. Transparency and Disclosure Requirements: All advertising content must clearly identify the advertiser and provide a transparent explanation of the product or service being offered. Claims presented in advertisements must be supported by verifiable evidence or credible scientific references. Content must not be misleading, deceptive, or use offensive or discriminatory language toward any individual or group.
  5. Separation from Editorial Content: To preserve the integrity and clarity of scholarly content, all advertisements must be visually and structurally separate from editorial and scientific content. We do not accept advertisements in the form of editorial-style articles or advertorials that may mislead readers. Sponsored supplements, special issues, or additional materials must include explicit sponsor disclosures to maintain transparency.
  6. Ethical Placement of Ads: Advertisements must not be displayed directly on pages containing scholarly articles related to the advertised product or service, in order to avoid perceptions of bias or conflict of interest. Furthermore, the use of article keywords or scholarly metadata to trigger advertisement display is strictly prohibited.
  7. Health and Pharmaceutical Product Advertisements: Advertisements related to health products, dietary supplements, or pharmaceuticals must adhere to high ethical standards and be oriented toward public interest. Such advertisements must promote responsible usage and must not make excessive or unsubstantiated medical claims. They must not imply that the advertised product is a substitute for medical diagnosis, treatment, or professional advice.
  8. Special Placement Requests: Requests for special advertisement placements—such as homepage banners, specific journal pages, or search result listings—must be submitted in writing via email to our editorial team at: [email protected]. Requests will be reviewed within a maximum of three (3) business days from receipt. The publisher reserves full discretion to accept or reject such requests based on the alignment of the advertisement content with our scientific vision, publication ethics, and academic integrity. Priority will be given to promotional materials that support the dissemination of scientific knowledge and do not conflict with our publication policies.
  9. Ad Removal and Complaint Handling: The editorial team retains the full right to remove or suspend any advertisement at any time, without prior notice to the advertiser, if the advertisement is found to violate this policy or upon receipt of a verifiable complaint from a third party. All complaints or concerns regarding advertising content may be formally submitted via email to: [email protected], and will be addressed in accordance with our complaint handling procedures.
  10. Compliance with Platform Policies: All advertisements displayed on the Utan Kayu Publishing website must comply with our Terms of Use and platform-wide policies: ukinstitute.org/term-of-use

5.2 Third-Party Links

Certain pages on the official Utan Kayu Publishing website may contain hyperlinks to third-party websites. These links are provided solely for the purpose of enriching user references and granting access to external resources. However, we have no control over the content, privacy practices, or security protocols of such third-party sites.

Accordingly, we assume no liability for any consequences arising from the use of external websites, including but not limited to, inaccurate information, unlawful activity, data breaches, or technical malfunctions. Any interaction or access by users to third-party websites is undertaken at the user’s own risk and discretion.

6. Privacy and Data Protection

6.1 Collection and Use of Personal Data

The publisher collects personal data from users, including but not limited to full names, institutional affiliations, email addresses, and academic roles (such as authors, editors, or reviewers), strictly for legitimate purposes related to the administration of the scholarly publishing process. Such data are used for editorial communication, system administration, user experience personalization, and aggregate statistical reporting that does not disclose individual identities. Data collection and usage are conducted in accordance with the principles of proportionality, transparency, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

6.2 Commitment to Security and Confidentiality

Significant corrections will be communicated to users through our official channels, which may include website announcements, email notifications, or postings on our official social media platforms.

9. Termination of Access and Account Deactivation

9.1 Termination by the Publisher

We retain full authority to temporarily suspend or permanently delete any user account found to be in violation of this Terms of Use. Such violations may include, but are not limited to, acts of plagiarism, infringement of intellectual property rights, misuse of our systems or services, and other unethical behaviors within academic or professional contexts. The publisher may also temporarily disable access in order to support an investigation into suspected violations.

9.2 Consequences of Termination

Upon deactivation or deletion of an account, the user's access to their personal data, contribution history (such as manuscript submissions, peer review records, or comments within the system), and other related services will be terminated and may be permanently removed from public view. However, all officially published and archived content will remain accessible to the public in accordance with the applicable publication license for the respective journal or book.

Certain provisions shall remain binding even after the termination of a user account. These include, but are not limited to:

  1. the license granted to the publisher and the public for the use of submitted and published content;
  2. legal and ethical responsibilities concerning the published work; and
  3. provisions concerning the protection of intellectual property rights and lawful third-party use of content under applicable open-access licenses.
